Association History

You have to know where you’ve been to know where you are going. Kappa holds a special place in its heart for Fraternity history, but every association of our organization has unique beginnings of its own. Each plays a part in shaping us today and continuing the Kappa tradition beyond college.

The Memphis Alumnae Association of Kappa Kappa Gamma was first envisioned by a group of Kappa friends over a ladies' lunch at the well-known Gerber's Department Store Tea Room in downtown Memphis.  It was officially chartered by the Fraternity on February 25, 1838 with 16 members.  In 2013, the Association celebrated its Diamond Jubilee 75th Anniversary and now boasts a dues-paid, active membership of nearly 100!  With approximately 875 Kappa alumnae in our region, we hope to continue our recent, energetic growth in the coming years.

The association has supported dozens of charities over the past 8 decades, most recently we have been proud to support local literacy education through our Literacy is Key: A Book and Author Event and annual "Reading is Key" service projects.

The Memphis Alumnae Association is very proud to have received the 2012 Patsy Bredwick Levang Philanthropy Award at the Biennial KKG Convention for Most Outstanding Philanthropy Event, and the 2012-13 Xi Province Outstanding Philanthropy Event Award.

In addition to our association's philanthropic projects, local Kappas are highly involved with local non-profit organizations such as the JDRF, The Exchange Club Family Center, Children's Museum of Memphis, the Junior League, The Grizzles' Mentoring Alliance, The Dixon Gallery and Gardens, Le Bonheur Children's Hospital, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital, Church Health Center, local animal shelters, schools, and countless other service organizations.  Proof positive that Kappas care!
